Research Project Forum

Use this discussion thread to share your working thesis with the class (or topic if you aren't as far as a thesis) and ask for help and advice.

I think "forum" sounds important, don't you??

Well, I guess I'll start...

I want to write about some aspect of marriage, but I know that's a really broad topic that needs to be narrowed down. I think there's enough discussion of marriage in several of Chaucer's tales, as well as in Utopia, Paradise Lost, Volpone, The Rover, Oroonoko, The Way of the World, and The Beggar's Opera, to focus on any of those works.

Right now, I'm trying to find a relationship between marriages in only 3 or 4 of those works, either similarites or contrasts...anyone have any ideas?

The first time I read this it didn't quite register that I was supposed to post a response...

Anyway I was thinking about tackling the topic of how women were treated/portrayed in the books that we've read. I've thought about approaching their characteristics in the stories as well as how they were seen by other characters in order to get a good idea of what the author himself (or herself) thought.

This may be a little challenging but I think it is an interesting topic.

Jamie,

This may sound like a spinoff of what I'm researching, but maybe you could look at the different roles of women in marriages vs. the roles of men? Or maybe if there is a type of role reversal in the relationships...

Jamie,

It sounds like we kinda had the same idea going on. I was wanting to write about some aspect of love as portrayed in the stories. But I'm having a hard time narrowing it down, or determining an actual thesis. I was thinking about using a story from The Canterbury Tales, Paradise Lost or Oroonoko, and The Way of the World or The Beggar's Opera. Can't decide. arg.

I want to write about religion or love. I am not sure yet I think religion was a topic that all of them touched on from the beginning.
Goodluck to everyone see you all in class

Thanks for the suggestion, Claudia. It definitely helped me pin down a relationship between several of the marriages we read about. I think I'm going try to compare the declarations of equality, fidelity, etc. that are made BEFORE marriage between Dorigen and Arveragus, Oroonoko and Imoinda, and Millamont and Mirabel (though I realize others could be thrown in as well), and how they seem to affect the relationships that ensue.

Good luck you guys!
